Volunteer role:
Battle Scars representative at club for university students
Lived experience of struggling with self-harm* or supporting someone close
who self-harms is required

What will the volunteers be doing in this role?
Battle Scars are working with Emma's Embrace to support university students in Leeds. The project It's Our Day runs every Saturday off campus during term-time 11-4, providing a relaxed social environment and food. The club has regular attendance of about 200 students each week. Our volunteers will be present to chat to students about self-harm, mental health and wellbeing - or just to chat!
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a few adults of all ages who have, ideally, used our services (including family/friends group) and are comfortable to chat to people on the day.
Members of the LGBT+ community and people from culturally diverse communities are especially encouraged to apply.
There is a full application and selection process - please be aware, not everyone who wishes to volunteer with us is recruited.
What commitment are we asking for?
We're asking for a minimum of 2 hours every few Saturdays. We aim to have one or two volunteers there every week but there will be a rota and volunteers can do as little as 2 hours every couple of months or as much as the whole day every week. The volunteers select when and for how long they wish to help out.
When?
Between 11 and 4 on Saturdays during university term-time
How do the volunteers benefit and what support do they get?
We value our volunteers and ensure they feel part of the team. By volunteering with us, volunteers build on existing skills or develop new ones, they take advantage of their lived experience to help others and get a sense of purpose. We provide role specific training as well as opportunities of further training. Ongoing support is provided by the volunteer manager, volunteer leader and other staff.
Does this role require a DBS check?
No, this role doesn't require a DBS check but some of our other roles do, so if you apply for multiple ones, a DBS check will be requested at our cost.
*Lived experience means that you actively self-harm, you are struggling with self-harm urges or you have struggled with the above in the past.
If you would like to apply, please select the application form below. If you'd like more information, please contact the volunteer manager.

"I volunteer with Battle Scars because I have seen first-hand from both a personal and professional perspective how little support there is for people who self-harm. I just think it is such a huge issue that the more support there is the better it is for everyone"
