Fundraising for Battle Scars - The Great Glencoe Challenge 6 July 2024
Alexis, you’re doing an amazing 26-mile trek to raise money for Battle Scars. Could you tell us a little more about how you came across Battle Scars?
I came across your service by pure chance. Another local support service gave my daughter a card with Battle Scars‘ details on it and I jumped at the opportunity to look into the support. I am from Scotland and I didn't think a service in Leeds would be helpful. I was very wrong. I signed up to join the online groups months before I eventually joined, perhaps I was in denial!
What is your experience of using Battle Scars’ services?
Battle Scars is a charity that understands the trauma I am facing when dealing with my distressed and confused child. No statutory agency I’ve come across understands this the way the people at Battle Scars do. They do more than listen to me, they hear me! I am not alone, I can smile here, I am supported here, and I can support others too.
What was it that made you want to raise money for Battle Scars?
I think we need to shout about third sector services, because my experience is that the statutory services I’ve come across are less than satisfactory. The lived experience is invaluable and I like the honest and supportive feedback on my thoughts, views and actions. I am fundraising for Battle Scars because I want to share with as many people as I can that support is out there. Sometimes you have to look outside your home town. Sometimes you have to be brave. Sometimes you have to give back. If a parent, friend or family member of somebody who self-harms was thinking about using our services, what advice would you give them? It takes a lot for a service to impress me and keep me coming back so I would simply say “DO IT”. Simple as that.
