Volunteer role:
Virtual group facilitator - family & friends group
Lived experience of supporting a close family member or friend is required
Why are we recruiting more virtual group facilitators for the parents & family group? We wish to strengthen our two group facilitator teams who run groups on Tuesday one week and Monday the week after (18:30-20:00). |
What are we looking for? We are hoping to find 1-2 people who have already used our groups and have benefitted from them. They must be supporting a close family member or close friend who is self-harming. The person self-harming can be of any age (child or adult). There is a full application and selection process - please be aware, not everyone who wishes to volunteer with us is recruited. |
What commitment are we asking for? We're asking for approximately 2 hours every fortnight. Each group runs every 2 weeks and lasts an hour and a half. The facilitators link up a bit early before each group and usually spend 5-10 minutes after to discuss how it went. We also hold a group facilitator team meeting every 3 months on a Saturday afternoon (1-2 hours). This group does not run between Christmas and New Year or during August. |
When? Monday and/or Tuesday evening (6.30-8pm) every 2 weeks. |
Does this role require a DBS check? No, this role does not require a DBS check. |
How do the volunteers benefit and what support do they get? We value our volunteers and ensure they feel part of the team. By volunteering with us, volunteers build on existing skills or develop new ones, they take advantage of their lived experience to help others and get a sense of purpose. We provide role specific training as well as opportunities of further training. Ongoing support is provided by the volunteer manager, facilitator team and other staff. |
What training do we provide? Some training is compulsory for this role but we also offer optional extra training (e.g. autism awareness, understanding personality disorders, mental health first aid, suicide prevention etc.) Compulsory - all training is virtual (Zoom) and takes place on Saturday afternoons: Group facilitation Safeguarding Equality, Diversity & Inclusion We train as and when we have enough new volunteers to run the course. |
If you would like to apply, please select the application form below. If you'd like more information, please contact the volunteer manager.

"I chose to volunteer with Battle Scars because I believe self-harm is an important cause that I have been personally affected by within my family which I had previously been unable to understand, and I think helping others to understand and cope is very important" |
"2 years ago through desperation I looked for some support for myself after learning that my son self-harms. I found Battle Scars . Through the fantastic support I received and the knowledge I have gained through the peer support group, I am now a volunteer for Battle Scars. My volunteering role is allowing me to give back, to help share the knowledge I have learnt and help give support back to others who are in the place I was 2 years ago. The care and support we receive and continued training from Battle scars is invaluable . Volunteering for Battle scars is so rewarding, so meaningful. I am honoured to be a volunteer for Battle Scars" |
