Volunteer role:
Face-to-face group facilitator - family & friends group Leeds
Lived experience of supporting a close family member or friend is required
|
Why are we recruiting more virtual group facilitators for the parents & family group? Our virtual family & friends groups run with two to three facilitators As some volunteers move on, we need new facilitators to keep every group running - and to make sure no one misses out. |
What are we looking for? We’re looking for 1–2 people who are supporting a close family member or friend who is self-harming. The person self-harming can be any age, child or adult. It’s helpful if applicants have previously attended our groups and found them beneficial, but this is not essential. Please note there is a full application and selection process, and not everyone who applies will be recruited. |
|
What commitment are we asking for? We ask for around 2 hours every fortnight. Each group runs for 1.5 hours, with a short check-in before and debrief afterward. Facilitators also join a team meeting every 3 months (1–2 hours on a Saturday). Please note there is reduced service delivery during school holidays. |
When? Wednesday evening (6.30-8pm) every 2 weeks. |
|
Does this role require a DBS check? No, this role does not require a DBS check. |
How do the volunteers benefit and what support do they get? Volunteering with us means being part of a supportive team where your lived experience makes a real difference. You’ll build on your skills, develop new ones, and find a strong sense of purpose through helping others. We provide full training for the role, plus opportunities for further development through our workforce programme and external courses. Ongoing support is always available from the volunteer manager, facilitator team and other staff. |
What training do we provide?
Some training is compulsory for this role but we also offer optional extra training (e.g. autism awareness, understanding personality disorders and more)
Compulsory - all training is virtual (Zoom) and takes place on Saturday afternoons:
Group facilitation
Safeguarding
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
We train as and when we have enough new volunteers to run the course.

"I chose to volunteer with Battle Scars because I believe self-harm is an important cause that I have been personally affected by within my family which I had previously been unable to understand, and I think helping others to understand and cope is very important"
